Posted: 1 AprilIt has considerable flaws, but also a lot of its own unique charm, and overall it's a good time killer. The good:1. A whole lot of stuff to figure out and unlock. From crafting recipes to character creation settings, there's a huge amount of unlockables, some are easy to unlock, some are hard, and some can take a really, really long time to unlock.
Meaning there's always something left to do, for a very, very long time, whether to make your character stronger, do something you haven't done before, or just unlock new things that aren't necessarily useful, but you do for the progress.2. Character customizability. There are many ways to configure your character, from the class-style (which weapon and stats you specialize in), which active/passive skills to equip and what equipment modifiers to use. While not everything is balanced, you still have quite a few choices to make even if you aim for a plausible build.3.
Immersive and enjoyable in a retro kind of way.Good pixel graphics on the enemies, background an environment, interesting looking NPCs, and spot on BGM makes for a nice atmosphere. Entering new areas feels exciting, intriguing and thrilling as you throw yourself to new situations against enemies you don't know you can beat, and there's a feeling of anticipation that the area's boss may suddenly show up any moment especially when you're not familiar with the spawning behavior for that boss yet.The bad:1.
Abrupt difficulty spike on story questsThe story final bosses are invariably harder than anything you face on the story quests before, and the difference is so abrupt that if you didn't know about this you'll just get curb-stomped. (A few hits and you die, on the other hand it may well take half a day for you to beat the relatively ridiculously powerful opponent, and if they spawn minions, you won't even be able to kill the minions and they'll keep increasing to the hundreds) And then your character dies with all the progress that doesn't carry over (some do) because you didn't know that you're totally unprepared and underleveled to fight the boss.I recommend checking the wiki before fighting the story final boss so that you have an idea how strong your character needs to be, or you might just waste your character.2. UnbalancedAs said above, the game isn't balanced.
When planning your character's build, you'll find out that most of the gear wouldn't really work out because there's simply a better one that isn't necessarily harder to get. Once you've figured out the basics of the game, looking at the wiki will improve your experience so you don't end up investing in builds that don't work out. Also, Poison and Burn are seriously overpowered, even with the mods and cures. They just deal too much damage over too long time. This can be solved by unlocking and using the Uniform that makes you immune to status effects.3. Some bosses just take forever to defeatMostly the post-game, optional Ultra Bosses. Even though being extra optional bosses they're supposed to be very powerful, the fight just gets plain boring because you're just dodging the same simple attack pattern for 20+ minutes, the strongest one probably takes outright hours if you try to fight it singleplayer.
(And probably still takes too long to be fun even in multiplayer) An HP bar for bosses would've been great, but it's not in the game. Conclusion:It's a fun game with a retro feeling, with tons of stuff to do. The battles themselves aren't as interesting, but building your character, progressing and immersing yourself in the game is the fun part.
There'll always be something new to do for a very long time, though after some point it'll involve various amounts of grinding. Use the wiki, it'll make your experience better.

Roguelands is a production developed by independent studio SmashGames. Like the previous work of this band, i.e. Magicite, the title is a 'croissant' enriched with elements taken from platformers. The production appeared on the PC platform.
Story
The Roguelands action takes place in the far future. Earth's civilisation has reached such a high level of development that it has managed to open the gates to another dimension. Unfortunately, things got complicated when a creature known as Destroyer, a giant monster devouring the nuclei of planets, crawled out of it. In the course of the game, the player plays the role of the Galactic Cadet, whose task is to wander around the globe in search of valuable resources before they fall victim to Destroyer. By saving the inhabitants of particular planets, he can broaden his knowledge about the world presented.
Mechanics
In the Roguelands released on the PC platform we observe the action from the side. The gameplay is based on the scheme characteristic for roguelikes. In the course of the game, we travel through various worlds generated by procedures(which we find ourselves on board of a spacecraft susceptible to modifications), fight enemies, perform various tasks and increase our combat potential, advance to the next levels of experience and gaining more and more powerful equipment. An important role is also played by an extensive crafting system - we acquire the resources necessary to create objects by sending to work droids capable of cutting down trees or even extracting valuable minerals, and if necessary, also support us in clashes with opponents.
Duels take place in real time and we use not only a wide range of weapons (we expand it as the adventure progresses), but also an extensiveset ofactive and passive skills provided by the so-called Combat Chips; special augmentations ensuring, for example, the possibility of teleporting on the battlefield. The game implements the permadeath mechanism, but after the death of the hero we lose only his experience and elements of equipment, which he had with him at the moment of leaving for that world. The items we have stored on board the ship can be used by another character, as well as the improvements we have made to our ship.
Game modes
Nothing stands in the way of playing Roguelands alone. However, the title unfolds wings while playing with other players in a collaborative multiplayer mode.
Technical issues
Like the Magicite mentioned above, the Roguelands described here has a simple pixel art design. Thanks to this, the developers managed to keep the hardware requirements at a low level.
